Glencoe is a village in the western Highlands of Scotland surrounded by mountains and the scenic steep valley of Glen Coe situated 14 miles south of Fort William and Ben Nevis; the highest mountain in the UK. Glencoe is an ancient area steeped in Scottish history famous for the Massacre of Glencoe of February 1692, where the MacDonald Clan were murdered in their beds at hands of their guests the Campbells in a planned political operation to suppress troublesome residents. Attractions include The Glencoe and North Lorn Folk Museum housed in traditional thatch-roofed cottages in the village and the Glencoe Visitor Centre by the main road. The bottom of the Clachaig Gully overlooking the Torren Lochan and Signal Rock forest was a location used in the film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban. Glencoe is a popular tourist resort, holiday and Ski Centre, there is a range of holiday accommodation with hotels and self-catering cottage, shops and amenities, restaurants, tea-rooms and cafes. Activities include hill-walking, skiing, mountaineering, mountain-biking, sailing and horse-riding and fishing. The West Highland way is a long distance footpath stretching from Glencoe to Kinlochleven.
