Kyle of Lochalsh is a village on the north-west coast in the Highlands of Scotland, situated near the village of Plockton. One mile to the west is the Skye Bridge which links the Isle to mainland Scotland. In 1819 the new road from Inverness arrived with the Highland railway following in 1897, Kyle of Lochalsh became the main ferry terminus for travelling to Skye. The ferries were de-commissioned in 1995 when the Skye Bridge opened. Kyle of Lochalsh is by the Balmacara Estate and Lochalsh Woodland Garden, a nature reserve and highland crofting estate. Kyle is a popular tourist resort with spectacular scenery, an abundance of wildlife, magnificent mountains for walking and climbing and a panoramic shoreline looking across to Skye. Much of the peninsula is formed by Loch Carron and Loch Alsh the surrounding peaks include Glenelg Brochs and Sgurr nan Conbhairean. There are hotels, holiday accommodation, restaurants and cafes nearby. The village has many white-washed buildings, a life-boat station, supermarkets, shops and a takeaway. Kyle has a busy working harbour, pleasure trips operate from the harbour offering fishing facilities, wildlife cruises and the Sea-Probe Atlantis, a unique semi-submersible passenger vessel, used for exploring the marine life.
