Lairg is a small rural village in central Sutherland in the Northern Highlands of Scotland, situated north of Inverness. Archaeological studies have found evidence Lairg was inhabited 5-6000 years ago with the discovery of Cairns and stone burial tombs built by stone-age farmers. In 1807 Lairg was one of the first villages to suffer from the Highland Clearances, where people were evicted from the land to make room for sheep. The railway arrived at Lairg in the 1800’s, still in operation, the railway line runs from Inverness to Thurso. Lairg was one of the first villages in the Highlands to have electricity first from a diesel generator financed by the owner in 1919 and then in 1950s the hydro-electric dam was constructed on Loch Shin. Lairg is a popular tourist resort with spectacular scenery and magnificent mountains, holiday accommodation, shops and local amenities. The Tourist Information Centre has a coffee shop, Internet access, a picnic and children’s play area, forest walks and archaeological trails over Ord Hill. Shin Falls are well-known for the salmon leap and its visitor centre has a restaurant and shop. The purpose-built Ferry-croft Countryside Visitor Centre demonstrates land changes in the area from the ice-age to present day; ranger-led guided walks are offered giving the opportunity to see rare and unique wildlife.
