Tomatin is a small rural village nestled in Strathdearn along with the hamlets of Moy and Dalarossie in the Highlands of Scotland. Strathdearn is a 22 mile long river valley formed by a glacier and the Monadhliath Mountains, with the Slochd Summit to the south and the River Findhorn though the centre. Tomatin is situated 15 miles south of Inverness and a few miles from the shores of Loch Ness. Tomatin from Gaelic means ‘Hill of the Juniper’ it is the main village in the Strath and has been famous for its malt whiskey production since the 16th century, although not officially established until1897. Tomatin currently has the largest malt whiskey distillery in the world. Tomatin is an ancient settlement inhabited 5-6000 years ago by Neolithic people, with the discovery of arrowheads and flint-scrapers. A Pictish stone-slab found near Moy is currently on display in the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. The village has an inn, a shop, a village hall and a church. Tomatin is surrounded by beautiful scenery and is a popular visitor resort, with holiday accommodation available throughout the Strath. Attractions include the large game estate at Coinafearn, with Grouse shooting in August, the area is ideal for fishing, walking, cycling and nature-watching. The hills are home to a variety of wildlife from wild-cats to buzzards.
