Banchory is a town in Royal Deeside, Aberdeeshire, Scotland, situated 16 miles west of Aberdeen on the north bank of the River Dee. Banchory is known as the ‘Gateway to Royal Deeside’ surrounded by picturesque scenery and attractive hills including the Cairn o Mount standing at 450m high. Banchory is an ancient settlement where St Ternan is said to have founded a monastery during the 5th century, two early Christen Cross-Slabs survive near the site of the old church. North of town is the Hill of Fare, the site of the Battle of Corrichie in 1562. The town was founded in 1805 and has historically interesting structures including two famous castles, the Crathes and Drum both run by the National Trust for Scotland. On Scolty Hill to the west there is a tower monument dedicated to General Burnett. Banchory has developed as a tourist resort with hotels, a Camping and Caravan Park, restaurants, pubs and a museum. There is a High Street with a variety of shops and a supermarket. The golf course was built in 1905, there is a driving range, mountain bike trails, and the River Feugh offers fishing. Banchory holds a summer show with fairground stalls and games, craft fair and competitions.
