Elgin is a former Royal Burgh town in Moray, Scotland, situated 26 miles east of Inverness. Elgin was founded by the Norse General Helgin, in the 10th century, created the first Scots burgh in 12th century by David I, received a Royal charter from Alexander II, before becoming a cathedral seat in 1224. Buildings of historical interest include the Royal Castle on Lady Hill, demolished in the 16th century now dominated by a monument to the 5th duke of Gordon dating1839. The Elgin Cathedral was once known as ‘lantern of the north’, the Cathedral was burned by the ‘Wolf of Badenock’ in 1390, the ruins are still impressive and a popular attraction. St Giles Kirk is Greek revival with heavy Doric columns and pediments and tall classical tower. Nearby the ruins of Spynie Palace built c1300 offers an insight into the medieval community. Elgin is an elegant town with Town hall, community centre, museum, gallery, theatre and a variety of shops. Cooper Park has activities for all the family including a boating pond and sporting facilities, Elgin has a golf club, a driving range, and leisure centre with swimming pool, ice-rink and gym. Glen Moray Distillery opens for visitors with guided tours.
