Lying on the banks of Loch Lomond, the West Dumbartonshire town of Balloch is for many a gateway to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Readily accessible by rail or road, Balloch is only a short journey from Glasgow’s city centre, and is assembled on the banks of the River Leven, tucked beside Alexandria and Jamestown. Balloch is the departure point for loch cruises – of which, Sweeney’s have been in business for over 100 years – and on the Leven there are a huge number of pleasure craft ranging from small fishing boats to luxury power-cruisers. The massive retail and leisure development of Loch Lomond Shores has been a huge economic boon for the area, with the hustle and bustle of Loch Lomond’s western shores contrasting markedly with its more bucolic eastern banks. Loch Lomond shores has a variety of big-name high street retailers, and its Sealife Centre is a great place to reward the kids for good behaviour after dragging them around the shops. Golfing fans swarm to the area each summer when the Loch Lomond Open is contested. Loch Lomond Golf Course has seen some of the world’s most celebrated pros in action, and with the nearby Carrick Golf Course, Balloch and Loch Lomond offers landlubbers more than their fair share of activities. Balloch Country Park and Castle have also been the venue for some huge outdoor pop concerts, temporarily raising the volume in an area more celebrated for its peace and quiet, no matter how busy it can get in the summer.
