With Kelvinside to the North, Partick to the South, Woodlands and Hyndland to its East and West respec-tively, Glasgow’s Hillhead is truly the beating heart of the city’s fashionable West End. It is an area alive with Bohemian sensibilities; boutiques, restaurants, bars and delicatessens line streets that take on a new life after dark. Home to a cosmopolitan population, with a great number students of Glasgow University, Hillhead is a most dynamic quarter of Glasgow, and a highly desired postcode. Such is the standard of living in Hillhead and its immediate neighbours, house prices are amongst the high-est in Scotland: the red sandstone tenements and Victorian townhouses, with huge rooms and high ceilings, rewrite the very definition of a des-res. The area is well-served by bus, road, and Glasgow’s small but reliable subway. Parking can be a nightmare in Hillhead, especially at weekends as visitors throng to its many eater-ies, but when Hillhead is only ten minutes on the tube from the city centre there is every reason to leave the car behind. Hillhead is bisected by Byres road, which stretches from Great Western Road all the way down to Dumbarton Road in Partick, and is home to much of the area’s attractions. Coffee aficionados will be jolting in clover af-ter experiencing superlative espressos at Tinderbox and Little Italy, the latter’s pizza is also a real culinary highlight, while those looking for something that wee bit stronger may enjoy shambling over Ashton Lane’s cobblestones on their way to the pedestrianised lane’s numerous bars; Jinty McGinty’s for Guinness and craic, Brel for Belgian beer, pots of moules et frits, and live jazz. The Ubiquitous Chip, opposite Jinty’s is a paragon of good Scottish cuisine. On a Saturday night, the abstemious are in the minority. And after all those long nights of over-indulgence, why not head to to the Botanic Gardens for a little pastoral restoration amongst the verdure? Or indeed, take refuge in culture, and catch one of the plays showing at Cottier’s Theatre on Hyndland Road, or the Oran Mor at the top of Byres Road.
