Johnstone is a town in Renfrewshire in the west of Scotland situated 3 miles south-west of Paisley close to the city of Glasgow. The town was founded in 1781 and planned out by the laird of Johnstone, George Houston. The first mill was built on Mill Brae in 1782 and the town grew as an industrial centre during the 18th and 19th century with its thread and cotton industry. The Glasgow, Paisley and Johnstone Canal opened in 1810, it stretched 11 miles from Johnstone to Port Eglinton and was designed to transport textiles, coal, slate and timeber with the passenger boat service operating from 1830, the canal closed in 1881 with the arrival of the railway. The Johnstone High Parish Church dates from 1792 with attractive spire added in 1823. Johnstone is a popular tourist destination ideally located for visiting the attractions of Paisley, Glasgow and the Clyde Valley. The town has holiday accommodation, inns, restaurants fast-food takeaways, a golf course, a fitness-centre and sports complex and excellent transport links both road and rail across Renfrewshire. Local attractions include Paisley Abbey founded in 1163, the Paisley Museum and Art Gallery, the Clydebuilt Scottish Maritime Museum and the Muirshiel Country Park with loch offering land and water-based activities, nature-trails and RSPB centre. Nearby Glasgow offers excellent shopping, dining-out and night-life.
