The interesting town of Kirkintilloch is positioned on the Forth & Clyde Canal in Dunbartonshire in Scotland, and is home to just over twenty thousand people. It first rose in importance when the Romans settled here and the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius built a wall, remnants of which can still be seen through the heart of the town. Visitors can enjoy a gentle stroll along the Canal Banks built in the 18th Century which brought prosperity to the town, where there's a choice of watering holes along the way offering coffee or something a little stronger. The commercial boats transporting goods on the Canal have all gone now, and today sees pleasure craft travelling at a sedate speed. There is an excellent choice in restaurants, bars and pubs which was not always the case in Kirkintilloch as it was for many years under prohibition of selling alcohol. The town was once the centre of the mining industry whose story is told at the interesting Museum housed in the Auld Kirk, Peel Park forges a link with Roman times, and there's a fabulous choice of shops that will test the hardiest of shoppers in the Regent Shopping Centre or, as it is only a few miles or so from the busy city of Glasgow it's perfectly placed.
