Born 1831. Died 1892 - Scottish organic chemist.
Studied classics and philosophy before turning to chemistry. Studied in Paris. About to present paper on assigning formulae to organic compounds but another chemist published first. Returned to Edinburgh and suffered permanent depressive illness. His work was given belated recognition.
