Auchtermuchty is an ancient Market town positioned on the northern side of the Howe of Fife, in Scotland, and is home to just over two thousand people. The Calsay Burn journeys through the town whose history dates back nearly two thousand years. There are attractive stone cottages and houses lining the roads, some of which date back many centuries. A stroll along the High Street will reveal the oldest house which was built in the 16th Century, and an impressive Town Hall which dominates the skyline. The Town Square or "Cross" was home to the Markets which led to the growth of the town after being declared a Royal Burgh by James V, and later the industries of weaving, and the distilling of whisky brought its own wealth. There is a good range of shops, and restaurants to try, together with a cosy Tea Shop which featured in the televised series of Dr Finlay's Casebook. There's welcoming pubs offering a dram or two, cottages, B&B's and a pleasing 18th Century Hotel for those visitors who are tempted to stay awhile as it's surrounded by beautiful Scottish countryside on the edge of Pitmedden Forest and is only nine miles or so from the historical town of Glenroathes.
