Dunfermline was the capital of Scotland for over 500 years and is the second largest town in Fife. The history dates back to 1065 when Malcolm Canmore moved his court here. The Dunfermline Abbey founded by Queen Margaret, is the most celebrated ancient building, with its Norman nave dating back to 1126. Robert the Bruce is buried in the Abbey grounds next to the 19th century parish church. Places of historic interest are St Margaret’s Cave, an underground place of pilgrimage and Abbot House 16th century town house converted into a local heritage centre. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline in 1835. His humble cottage is now his Birthplace Museum. Carnegie’s gifts to the town include the first Public Library, The Carnegie Hall and Pittencrieff Park. Described as the ‘Gateway to Scotland’ Dunfermline is a town steeped in 1000 years of history but at the same time is home to all the modern amenities. The busy town centre is the retail focus with a variety of shops, The Kingsgate Shopping Centre. The Carnegie Leisure Centre has a swimming pool, gym and sauna facilities. A Leisure complex in the eastern expansion to the town is complete with Odeon Cinema, Bowl Plex, Bingo Hall and a plethora of restaurants and fast food eateries. Dunfermline has three 18 hole golf courses and home to Dunfermline Athletic Football Club (The Pars) at East End Park.
