Freuchie is a small quiet village in the rural Howe of Fife at the foot of the East Lomond Hill. It is situated two miles east of Falkland. The name Freuchie means ‘heather’ from the Scottish Gaelic, ‘fraoch.’ There are many interesting 18th and 19th century buildings including a Church built in 1875, and a Victorian Linen Mill built c.1870. The Victorian style Lumsden Memorial Hall in the High Street, ensures the Linen Mill is not forgotten. It is said French masons working on the construction of Falkland Palace lived here during the 16th century and was used by the Royal Family as a place of exile for disgraced courtiers, hence the old, politically incorrect, saying ‘Awa’ tae Frechie, whaur the froggies live.’ Freuchie is a popular area for golfer to stay; it is ideally located for easy access to all Fife’s 51 courses, including St Andrews Old Course only 18 miles away. The village has small hotel, The Lomond Hills Hotel in Parliament Square, which dates from 1753 and the Ochil Villa B&B in the High Street. There are self catering cottages in the area. Freuchie also has a cricket club and were the winners of the village cricket championship at Lords in 1985.
