Population 10,000. Situated on the peaceful River Waveney, this fine market town was once a flourishing seaport. The town is one of the major centres for holiday boating in the Southern part of the Broads.
The town of Beccles is situated in the heart of the Waveney Valley. The town has many 18th Century buildings, but the parish church of St Michael’s with its imposing detached bell tower predates this period. The tower dates from the early 16th Century and serves as a landmark for miles around. One of Beccles’ other most notable buildings is Roos Hall, a very distinguished manor house, which is said to be one of the most haunted houses in England. Though no longer a port, Beccles has remained an important sailing town. The Quay at Beccles is a busy mooring area for leisure boats and yachts.
Modern Beccles is a popular base for touring the local broadland countryside and for walking, cycling and boating. The earliest history of Beccles goes back to before Doomsday. The Abby and Convent of St Edmund held the town until 1540 when Henry VIII granted the area to William Rede for £120.
From independent craft shops to national retailers, Beccles offers a shopping experience to suit everyone. Coupled with excellent cafes, restaurants and public houses Beccles is the perfect location to unwind and relax.
