Brandon is a small town and civil parish in the county of Suffolk. Brandon is located in the Breckland area on the border of Suffolk with Norfolk. There is a USAF air base, Lakenheath, just a mile or so away. From prehistoric times the area was mined for flint as can be seen at Grimes Graves, a large Neolithic flint mining complex. Grimes Graves is in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public. It is possible to descend a 9 metre ladder and explore one of the shafts. This is the only shaft of its kind open to the public in Britain. On the town's doorstep is the High Lodge Forest Centre, popular with cyclists and day trip families. Brandon has a small market every Thursday & Saturday. There are several shops and pubs in the town. The Brandon Heritage Centre on George Street documents the towns once booming flint and fur trades. Brandon Country Park on Bury Road was originally a country house with extensive parkland. It is now a wildlife park open between February and November and the house is a nursing home. Brandon also features a monument to the 7th Armoured Division who trained there prior to D-day.
