Exning is a village in Suffolk, roughly 12 miles from Cambridge and 2.5 miles from Newmarket. Exning was one of the major settlements in this area during Anglo-Saxon and Medieval times. Between the 14th and 16th Centuries it is said that the population of Exning decided to leave their homes to try and escape the plague, and build a new settlement nearby. Thus 'New'market was born. Newmarket is now the largest racehorse training centre in Britain, and home to several horseracing institutions. Due to its proximity to Newmarket, Exning has several stud farms and a national equine hospital. Exning has two churches, the Medieval St Martin’s whose tower is visible from the A14 flyover; and St Philip and St Etheldreda, the former Newmarket workhouse chapel. Exning is reputed to have been the birthplace of Saint Ethelreda, to whom the cathedral at nearby Ely is dedicated. Ely, in the bordering county of Cambridgeshire, is the third smallest city in England. Oliver Cromwell lived in Ely, and his former home now serves as the Tourist Information Office and a museum. Exning has a mixture of shops along Oxford Street and Chapel Street. Pubs include The Wheatsheaf
