Berwick-upon-Tweed is a historic town situated on the north bank of the River Tweed in Northumberland on the Scottish Border, the town changed hands many times before 1482, since then it has remained English. Berwick-upon-Tweed is a popular tourist resort, steeped in history with many things to see and do. There is a holiday park and caravan club site, hotels, self-catering accommodation, B&B’s, a good range of shops, beaches and plenty of choice of places to eat. Historically interesting features include the three Tweed bridges including the ‘Old Bridge’ dating from 1611, the remains of the medieval Berwick Castle once subjected to many cross-border battles and the Town Wall built by Elizabeth I to protect the town; these Tudor town walls are almost completely intact and can be walked around in approximately 45 minutes. Other attractions include historic Berwick Barracks which date from 1717-1721 which houses the Museum and Art Gallery, the Tower House Pottery, the Maltings Theatre and Arts Centre with café, restaurant, bar, exhibitions, classes and workshops. Either side of the border are; the English Norham Castle once known as the most dangerous place in England and Paxton House a Scottish mansion built in 1758, four miles west of town with a collection of fine furniture and lying in parkland and woodland with a restored Victorian boathouse and a fishing museum.
