Lauder is a small historic market town in the central Scottish Borders region situated next to the Leader Water on the western edge of the Lammermuir Hills, 22 miles south of Edinburgh. Lauder was granted Royal Burgh status in 1502. The town has a wide central market place and much of the medieval street plan remains. The Romans used Lauder 1800 years ago as a link between northern England and central Scotland Lauder is a popular tourist destination surrounded by beautiful scenery, there are two hotels; one is a coaching inn built c1700, self-catering accommodation, B&B’s, two camping and caravanning sites, shops and amenities. Historically interesting features include the dominating Town Hall, the Greek cross plan, Lauder Old Church, with octagonal tower built in 1673; the watch-tower was built in 1830 to deter body-snatchers. In the north-east stands the turreted Baronial Thirlestane Castle, one of the seven ‘Great Houses of Scotland,’ built c1590 and was once the seat of the Earls of Lauderdale, it is decorated by a large art collection and exhibitions of local country life, the castle is open to the public and has tours. There is a woodland walk around the castle and the Thirlestane Castle International Horse Trials are held in the estate parkland, the event includes the family fun ring with children’s entertainment and carriage driving.
