Ardrossan is a sea-port and former burgh on the Coast of North Ayrshire, western Scotland, on the north side of Irvine Bay, 17 miles north of Ayr and is part of ‘The Three Towns’ along with Saltcoats and Stevenston. Ardrossan was given burgh status in 1846 Ardrossan famous for the event known as ‘Wallace’s Larder’ at Castle Craig in 1296, William Wallace lured occupying English soldiers from the castle, by torching the village, the returning soldiers were slaughtered and their bodies thrown into the dungeon; the ruins of Castle Craig still stand. Historically the town dates back to c1140 with the construction of the castle, interesting buildings include Barony St. John’s Church dating mid 19th century and St. Peter-in-chains Roman Catholic Church with Swedish style modern construction. Ardrossan was founded as a resort in 1805, the deep-water harbour suitable for steamboats connecting with Arran, Ireland, Isle of Man and Campbeltown, today the harbour has been redeveloped as a marina and a ferry-point operating to Brodick on Arran. Ardrossan has a variety of shops, town hall, library, hotel and local amenities, there are walks and cycle-paths, Ardrossan is linked to Eglinton Country Park via the Sustrans Cycle-path. Off shore lies the small island Horse Isle an RSPB reserve.
