Mauchline is an interesting town set close to the Ayr River in Ayrshire, Scotland, and is home to just over four thousand people. Its fascinating history can be traced as far back as the 7th Century when a bloody battle was fought between the Picts and the Scots on Mauchline Moor. Remnants of the town's past is there to be seen from the church where a flag hangs inside which has seen many battles, to the ruins of an Abbey that was built by Cistercian Monks in the 1100's. From a small settlement the town grew with the Quarrying of Sandstone playing its part together with the renowned Mauchline Ware, and clock making. There are a fine selection of shops with tempting crystal treasures on display, restaurants to satisfy most tastes, and a choice of pubs to try. A walk around the town will uncover an historic Coaching Inn which continues to welcome visitors, an interesting Water Spout next to the Inn, and a superb Museum which was once home to the brilliant Scottish poet Robbie Burns and his wife who lived here in the 18th Century. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside that will always tempt walkers and cyclists here, and for those who wish to stay there is an excellent choice on offer.
