Turnberry is a small village on the South Ayrshire coast, Scotland, six miles north of Girvan, situated on Turnberry Bay with a 2km of beaches. Turnberry is famous as the home to one of the world’s first purpose-built golf resorts. Equipped with two championship 18-hole courses, a 9-hole course, a pitch and putt and golf academy. The Ailsa course opened in 1903 and hosted the first Open Championship in 1977. A second championship course was added in 1912 now known as The Westlin Turnberry Resort. This is an exciting links course with fantastic scenery and ocean holes. The Colin Montgomerie Links Golfing Academy was built in 2000. Turnberry, although dominated by golf, is an area of historical interest, Turnberry Lighthouse was built in 1873 and stands on the coast near Turnberry point on the site of the ruins of Turnberry Castle, believed to be the birthplace of Robert the Bruce, slighted in 1310 to keep it out of English hands and never re-built. Turnberry is a popular tourist resort with the Turnberry Hotel, lodges and cottages, offering country club facilities and an Outdoor Activities Centre. National Trust for Scotland maintains the nearby Culzean Castle 1777, and country park with visitor centre, activity playground, restaurant and shops.
