Glendarual is a Glen or valley on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll and Bute on the west coast of Scotland. From Gaelic Glendaruel means, ‘Glen of red blood’, relating to a battle in 1110, when the Gaels slaughtered invaders and threw them into the River Ruail. Archaeologists excavated a site on the slope of the hill to reveal evidence of Neolithic settlers in the area. Glendaruel wood and crags and the Ruel Estuary have been listed as sites of Scientific interest. The present Kilmodan Church is a T-plan built in 1783 on the site of earlier churches dating back to 10th century; the church was dedicated to the Celtic Saint Modan. The church yard contains carved stones from the 13th -15th century. On the hill side sits St. Moden’s Well. Nearby are the ruins of a building thought to be the original chapel. Glendaruel is tranquil and picturesque; it has a caravan and camping park and is a popular area for artists and photographers. The Glen is ideal for walking, cycling, bird and nature watching. The neighbouring village of Colintraive operates a ferry crossing to the Isle of Bute across the stretch of water known as the Kyles of Bute is popular for yachting.
