Lochgilphead, on the shores of Loch Gilp, an inlet of Loch Fyne, might be a small town, but it is the administrative hub for Argyll and Bute, an area which covers much of western Scotland. Founded in 1790, Lochgilphead has a quaint, quiet charm and is well worth a visit from anyone travelling along the A83 to Campbeltown. Visitors can relax in a town free of relentless modernism, a town with the more peaceful atmosphere of the past. Lochgilphead’s most significant moment in history came arguably with the construction of the Crinan Canal, which was completed in 1801, allowing for easy access for vessels travelling from the Clyde to the Inner Hebrides. The canal was redesigned by legendary civil engineer Thomas Telford and is well worth exploring. Nowadays it is traffic from yachts that fills the canal, as sailing parties negotiate the beautiful waters on Scotland’s west coast. Lochgilphead is a great base from which to explore the nearby Mull Of Kintyre and activities available include; exploring Kilmory Castle, coastal walks, fishing, golf and loch cruises. Lochgilphead has some fine restaurants, and accommodation ranging from hotels to caravan sites. This unspoiled area of Scotland is perfect for a driving holiday, best start your engines.
