Llandrindod Wells did not really exist much before the 13th century although the Romans were aware of the beneficial effects of the local spring water and today just outside the town is Castell Collen, the remains of a Roman settlement. By the 13th century the houses scattered around benefited from the building of the Llanerch Inn and two churches, both of which are still in use today. One of the churches is to be found in a local beauty spot known as “Shaky Bridge”, for obvious reasons, and which is also the entrance to Radnorshire Wildlife Trust’s woodland nature reserve at Bailey Einon, It was the coming of the railways in the Victorian era that saw Llandrindod Wells become more popular when it grew at a phenomenal rate as “taking the waters” was the fashionable thing to do. In 1870 the park was created with its picturesque lake and around 1880 Radnorshire County Council established its offices here. Building was being undertaken at a phenomenal rate, new treatment centres, a golf course, hotels indeed everything to ensure the success of the town. Such was the popularity and importance of the town that visitors cannot fail to note the Automobile Palace – built in 1913 by Tom Norton for his expanding motor business today the building is a Grade II Listed building and home to the National Cycle Museum. Today Llandrindod Wells is very much at the centre of the local tourist industry, it has its annual Victorian Festival in August, this year, will see the return of the Lombard Rally for four days in November, the Royal Welsh Show is held close by in July each year in Llanelwedd just south of Llandrindod Wells, as well as being a base for those who wish to tour this part of Wales by car or by using The Heart of Wales Railway
