This town in Gwent was the birthplace of the National Health Service as it was here, in Tredegar, that Aneurin Bevan was born in 1897 leaving school at the age of 13 to work in the local mines and by the age of 19 the politically aware Aneurin Bevan was chairman of the local lodge of the South Wales Miners Federation before embarking on his career in politics. Tredegar really started to develop as a town from around the early 1800’s and it was at this time that the Tredegar Iron Company was founded and this ensured the economic success of the town through the 19th century. In 1829 the Chief Engineer at the Ironworks was allowed to purchase a steam train, this was built at the Tredegar Iron Works and commissioned the same year. Originally used for the transportation of raw materials such as iron ore and coal to Newport coaches were subsequently added and fare paying passengers were permitted. The growth of the town through this economic boom was phenomenal, in 1801 the local population was around 1132 and by 1881 the population is recorded as being around 34685 such was the demand for labour at the ironworks and nearby quarries. Today there are still obvious signs of the success of the town during that period, the Town Clock erected in 1858 for the benefit of local miners and workers with a face on each side so that it is easily visible for most directions. Bedwelty Park, a Victorian Park in which is to be found the ironmasters residence which was built in 1818 and where you can take a stroll amongst the trees and 26 acres of parkland and where if you are lucky enough you can see the town band playing. For those who prefer their parks to be somewhat larger then there is Bryn Bach Country Park, some 600 acres of grassland and tree plantations with a 36 acre lake set on the outskirts of Tredegar.
