Neath (Castell- nedd) is on the A465 ( M4.J43). With a current population of approx. 55 thousand inhabitants, there has been a settlement at this crossing place of the river Neath since ancient times. The remains of Neath Castle are close to today’s shopping centre and other local attractions include The Cistercian Neath Abbey and Gnoll Park. Neath has a proud association with Rugby - The local team formed in 1871 and the inaugeration of the W.R.U. took place at the Castle Hotel in 1881 . Admiral Nelson also stayed at this hotel on his way to Milford Haven, so today’s visitors enjoy history and hospitality. Neath is the centre of a beautiful area stretching from the majestic Brecon Beacons to the golden sands of the South West Wales Coast. You can explore the network of footpaths in the Vale of Neath or the cycle tracks in the Afan Valley (known locally as 'Little Switzerland'). Margam Country Park is also popular for its splendid landscapes, architecture, rich heritage and cultural past. It has a magnificent 18th Century Orangery, an impressive and picturesque Tudor-Gothic style Victorian Mansion House and 12th Century Chapter House. It often hosts antique fairs and other events.
