Pontardawe in the Swansea Valley lies 8 miles north of Swansea on the A4067. Originating as a small settlement at the junction of two ancient drover’s roads, this small town (population approx 5000) was principally known, up untill the mid C20th, as a centre for the steel and tinplate industries. Whilst still retaining some light industry and having much recent retail development, many would say the character of Pontardawe is rapidly changing. Visitors are often drawn here due to the proximity to the Swansea Canal and are sometimes pleasantly surprised to find that the local Arts Centre ( which is supported by the Arts Council ) has now gained a reputation as one of the finest cultural venues in South Wales. It showcases varied works of the highest standards from classical music events through drama and dance, literature and children's theatre plus blues and world music. This is also home to the thriving local film society whose members enjoy the latest blockbusters as well as the less mainstream art house movies. The Oriel Lliw Gallery has varied exhibitions throughout the year. If live music is your passion, it is worth remembering that Pontardawe hosts an international music festival each August.
