Llangollen lies in the Dee Valley in North Wales and is a town that offers more than beautiful scenery and plenty to do. Llangollen is steeped in history and is home to the International Musical Eisteddfod – they say it is where the world comes to Wales and Wales welcome the world! The history of the town goes back to the Iron Age and Dinas Bran Castle through the Dark Ages and the legend of King Arthur – close to the canal towpath is the remains of a stone cross and the earliest recorded name for this cross is Croes Gwenhwyfar and Gwenhwyfar is the original Welsh name of Gueinevere, wife of King Arthur. Continuing through history there is the splendid Valle Crucis Abbey, founded in 1201, but sadly only the ruins remain today providing an insight as to how great this abbey once was. There is the canal, the Llangollen Wharf, from where trips can be taken to the country's biggest navigable aqueduct towering a massive 126ft above the River Dee, there is the famous Plas Newydd found on a hill above the town with fabulous views of both Castell Dinas Bran and Eglwysig Rocks where the Ladies of Llangollen attracted their auspicious guests and is worth a visit today to enjoy the Gothic splendour of the place. There is the Llangollen Steam Railway with its listed buildings just over the bridge from the town centre and today offering trips up the valley through some of the most picturesque countryside in the area. The bridge itself is worthy of mention, it is claimed that this was the site of the first stone bridge over the River Dee and the bridge as it is today was built in 1345, later rebuilt in the Elizabethan period it is said to be much the same as it was in 1345. The Victorian influence is evident in the town centre and it offers a wide variety of local shops – there is no denying though that today Llangollen offers a truly wide variety of activities, it is no surprise that visitors find themselves not venturing much further than the town centre with so much to enjoy.
