Step across the border from Chester, England into beautiful North Wales, and you arrive almost immediately at Wrexham, a town very much on the up, but with its roots firmly in its past. If you have not visited Wrexham before it is well worth a visit to this emerging Welsh town and if you have visited Wrexham previously on your next visit you will be in for a surprise!
Often described as the 'capital' of North Wales, Wrexham has grown over the years from a small market town into a major shopping centre and centre of commerce. It has a blend of small shops, covered markets and arcades together with modern high street stores and offices. However, few town centres have changed as much as Wrexham has in the last two years. More than £150 million of development has taken place, bringing two new shopping centres into the town itself, complemented by broad pedestrianised shopping areas with a busy, yet friendly atmosphere.
Throughout all the change, the Wrexham skyline has been dominated since 1520 by St Giles Church, one of the 'Seven Wonders of Wales' and burial place of Elihu Yale, benefactor of Yale University, USA. The town centre is also home to the Wrexham County Borough Museum, Wrexham Library Arts Centre, Waterworld - a state of the art swimming complex and the Racecourse Football Ground venue for international football and rugby matches as well as Wrexham FC. Wrexham is gaining a reputation as a venue for major international events. In recent years it has hosted a Rugby World Cup match, Rugby League World Cup match, international football and motorsport's 'Rally of Wales. There are many events, sporting and cultural, all published in the guide to What's On in Wrexham.
The town lies at the heart of the North Wales Borderlands, a beautiful, refreshingly unspoilt part of North Wales. South-west of Wrexham are Chirk and the Ceiriog Valley. The Marcher castle at Chirk (a National Trust property) guards the entrance to the beautiful secret Ceiriog Valley, the setting for the picture-postcard prettiness of the tiny village of Llanarmon DC. This is where wild Wales begins, in the Berwyn Mountains. To the south-east of Wrexham, the lush Cheshire Plains begin their transformation into Welsh hills, with picturesque villages like Hanmer, Erbistock and Overton. On the banks of the broad River Dee is Bangor-on-Dee, with its National Hunt racecourse. Other notable venues within the area are the National Trust's Erddig Hall with its unique upstairs-downstairs story, and the famous Llangollen Canal, perhaps the prettiest stretch of canal, with Thomas Telford's Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (a proposed World Heritage site).
As a starting point for the unfamiliar visitor, why not explore some of the super short break packages currently available to help you get to know the area. One unusual package is a canal boat three night break. Alternatively, there are walking breaks (with a guide if required), racing breaks and historic house and garden breaks. All are for two nights, dinner, bed and breakfast. Population 43,000
