Llandeilo, named after St Teilo, is seven miles north of Ammanford . Entry is over the largest stone bridge in Wales . It also has a small suspension bridge officially called the King’s Bridge unofficially known as “the shaky one” Llandeilo sits close to the Black Mountains, overlooking the Tywi Valley. There are traces of Roman occupation and the town history is bound up with that of C12 Dinefwr Castle which occupies the site of an earlier iron age hill fort. Traditionally the seat of the Welsh Kings and Princes of Deheubarth this was the historic centre of lawmaking. In C10 Hywel Dda called together an assembly to consider a basis for Welsh law . Their decisions formed the basis of the legal system in Wales until 1536. Today Llandeilo is still considered a quiet and law abiding place, much admired for its Georgian and Victorian architecture. Nearby C18 Newtown House with its later gothic façade is a fine example. Carreg Cennen castle with outstanding views sits a few miles south-east off the A483 and naturalists will appreciate Llandyfeisant Church and Castle Woods. In this predominantly rural area, good accomodation is provided in local farmhouses, cottages, bunkhouses and country hotels.
