The village of Alton, Staffordshire lies to the east of Stoke on Trent in the rolling countryside and is today famed for the theme park to the north of the village from which it takes its name, Alton Towers. The village of Alton is an ancient village tracing its history back to around 716 AD and with a castle being first mentioned in 1000 AD. The village is ideally situated on rising ground on the south slope of the Churnet Valley and today boasts some of the best views of the valley and surrounding areas. Today the castle, despite many reconstructions still occupies a predominant place in the village centre off Castle Hill Road and is still in use today as a retreat centre. The church of St Peter is to the west of the castle and dates back to the 13th century with some parts dating back to the late 12th century. There is also the Church of St John dating back to the middle of the 19th century and with some interesting features built by the 16th earl of Shrewsbury, John Talbot who’s tomb is located within the church. Alton has plenty to offer both the visitor and resident, not only is there plenty of history surrounding this small village but its setting within this picturesque countryside remains its most constant attraction.
