The Churnet Valley village of Cheddleton sits between Stoke-on-Trent and Leek, nearer to the latter than the former. It is a large settlement comprising the original village and a more modern development making use of the old psychiatric hospital. Staffordshire’s heritage in the pottery trade has left its mark on the village in two ways, a Flint Mill (the stone ground for use in pots) now a museum, and the Cauldon Canal that was used for transporting materials used in the business. The canal provides some lovely waterside, with two locks near the village and a pub, The Black Lion, by the towpath (unusually the pub having no public road access). There is another significant attraction in the village, its preserved railway that has about 11 miles of track running steam trains, the station in the village a notable Tudor-esque building that like the line itself was only saved thanks to a local campaign. Rather less scenically there is a meat rendering plant in the environs, bringing employment (as it has for three quarters of a century) but also gripes about lorry traffic among other things. As a community Cheddleton is noted for organising regular events including a carnival in August and a large Bonfire Night gathering.
