Rocester is a small village with a handful of local shops and a couple of pubs on the main street, the village is located in the Staffordshire Moorlands District close to the border with Derbyshire. It lies close to where the Rivers Dove and Churnet and is popular with walkers as there are many picturesque walks connecting Rocester and the Limestone Way. Rocester can trace its history back to pre Roman times with the archaeological finds from the Bronze Age having. been found in the area and there is possible evidence of an Iron Age fort in the vicinity of Barrow Hill. The Romans considered this location to be an excellent strategic position and remained here to around 150AD as there have been “finds” here which can be dated back to that period. Rocester has always had an important part to play in the economics of the local area, in the late 1700’s there was a water powered cotton mill and with the arrival of the canals and trains other industries, such as brickworks, stoneworks and cheeseworks were attracted to the area. It was around this time that the town started to grow, the local mills being the major local employers. Today Rocester is home to JC Bamford – better known as JCB manufacturers of heavy earth moving equipment, their head office complex featuring two good sized lakes, whilst close by to the west of the town is a large industrial park providing local employment. .
