Newton Stewart is a large market town in Dumfries and Galloway in southern Scotland situated on the west bank of the River Cree. The town was planned and named after its founder William Stewart in 1677 and is surrounded by the scenic Galloway Hills and the Galloway Forest Park; a popular tourist destination with forest trails, spectacular scenery and wildlife attracting hill-walkers, cyclists and nature-watchers. Newton Stewart has a hotel, shops, bars, award winning restaurants and a cinema. Historically interesting features include the Town Hall dating from c1800 and the Gothic style Parish Church dating from1840, Murray’s Monument is an obelisk erected in memory of local Alexander Murray and the Newton Stewart Museum holds exhibits of many aspects of the natural and social history of central Galloway. The Marrbury Smokehouse is a shop and restaurant offering gourmet traditionally smoked foods located next to the Glentrool Forest Park. Salmon and trout fishing is available in the River Cree, the Cree Valley Community Woodlands has nature walks and educational facilities, there is the Wood of Cree RSPB reserve and The Tropic House with tropical butterflies, exotic plants, a garden centre, a tea-room and gift shop. The Kirkdale Water Driven Sawmill and Nature Trail has the only working water-powered sawmill in Scotland.
