Bonchurch, with its olde-world atmosphere, is the ideal retreat for anyone seeking a peaceful break far from the madding crowd. A village which has inspired such literary figures as Charles Dickens, John Keats and Anna Sewell, it developed on the side of St Boniface Down - the island's highest point - during the Victorian era. Like its larger neighbour, Ventnor, it originally attracted wealthy families setting up holiday homes. These grand houses of yesteryear make for a stunning contrast with the village's modest stone cottages, narrow streets and varied scenery. Down by the bay is a shingle and sand beach enclosed by rocks that guarantee children loads of good old-fashioned holiday fun, climbing, scrambling and fishing in the rock pools. On the front, the cafés tempt families with fresh, locally caught seafood. One of Bonchurch's most popular spots is the village pond, not only because of its restful surroundings but also for the ducks and the gulping carp that jostle to devour any food thrown by visitors. Walkers love The Landslip, an excellent clifftop journey through ancient oak woodland and a dramatic gorge called the Devil's Chimney, and the pedestrian route to Ventnor, taking in the sights of Wheelers Bay.
