Port Erin, once a tiny fishing village, is an enduringly popular spot with holiday-makers who have discovered its sandy beach, spectacular scenery and glorious sunsets over the bay. The town is found at the south of the island nestling below towering cliffs, grassy hills and dramatic headlands, a secluded location that benefited smugglers in bygone days. Port Erin's great landmark, the key-shaped Milner's Tower, stands high on Bradda Head overlooking the beach and its lighthouse, the pleasure boats in the harbour and the coast's rocky inlets. It was built by the townspeople in 1871 as a tribute to their benefactor, Liverpool safe-maker William Milner - "the Godfather of Port Erin". Visitors may walk up a winding pathway through Bradda Glen to the tower, for sensational views over land and sea. A variety of boat trips are available for anglers or nature-lovers wishing to observe seals and birds in the wild. In town, the Erin Arts Centre presents music, theatre and crafts, while the Railway Museum recalls the history of steam travel on the island. Excitingly, real steam trains are still running today. Dating back to 1874, they carry passengers through 15 miles of delightful countryside between Port Erin and Douglas.
