Lying to the north of Manchester City Centre is the Crumpsall district of the city. Once set apart from the main city of Manchester, the original village of Crumpsall Green lying on a bend on the River Irk and taking its name from the old English phrase for “crooked piece of land by the river” the urbanization of the town came about as a result of the Industrial Revolution and eventually light industry moved into the area. With this an increase in population meant that there was increase in the building of churches, schools and homes adding to the urbanization of the area. The early 20th century saw the arrival of a large Jewish community who had fled from Europe, one of whom was Abraham Moss, a successful businessman he was to fund the founding of King David High School on Eaton Road whilst his name lives on commemorated in the Abraham Moss Centre, a large modern education and community college on the southern border of the district. The architecture present today very much reflects its Victorian heritage, many of the houses are of that period but today they are home mainly to students and nurses, the former prettiness of the area is now somewhat faded but as with the City Centre efforts are once again being made to improve the area.
