Eccles is a suburb of Manchester, to the north of the City tracing its history back to around 1200 and whose Romano British name is taken to simply mean “church” from the Latin “Ecclesia”. Eccles, unlike other Manchester towns, managed to remain reasonably industry free until the latter part of the 18th century and then the canal arrived easing access and helping industry to grow. The area already a thriving silk industry but the climate and canal network soon meant that the mills were given over to cotton production. However Eccles is most famous for its cake – the Eccles Cake was invented here in the late 18th century and even today arguments still rage as to who should be credited with their invention, was it James Birch or was it Elizabeth Raffald? At one time the recipe included rum and brandy and that may account for why the Puritans wanted to ban the sale of them! Today Eccles has the benefit of many local amenities and services which has its attraction for the local residents and whilst the original location of where the first Eccles Cakes were made has now gone it is still worth taking the time to track one down and savour it over a cup of tea or coffee whilst watching the world go by.
