Stenhousemuir is a small historic town in the Falkirk district of Scotland situated to the north of Falkirk lying between the villages of Larbet and Carron, north of the River Carron. The towns name literally means ‘stone house on the hill’ and was originally named after a Roman building on the Carron River Valley. From 1785 Stenhousemuir was well-known by cattle-drovers taking their herds to the annual farmers market Trysts. Stenhousemuir is famous for its football team, Stenhousemuir FC, currently playing in the Scottish League Division 3 and as the home of McCowan’s Toffee Factory famous for its traditional toffee and irn-bru bars. Surrounded by parkland and rolling hills, Stenhousemuir is a popular tourist destination and ideal base for touring the neighbouring attractions. There is holiday accommodation, pubs, cafes, restaurants and takeaways. Architecturally interesting features include the Stenhousemuir and Carron Church with unique features and the Larbet East Church with its imposing tower. Local attractions include the golf club which was built in 1885 and the Ochilview and Crownest Parks. A regeneration project has recently taken place ensuring the town has a well equipped town centre and an excellent shopping complex, parking facilities, a new library and football pitch with improvements made to the recreational park.
