Beckington is a small village situated about three miles north of Frome in Somerset. It is a beautiful place with many charming old stone buildings. Village history goes back at least as far as the Domesday Book of 1086 and the Battle of Agincourt featured archers from Beckington. The Norman Church of St George dates from the 14th century. The tower contains two bells made by Thomas Bilbie in 1756. English Heritage have designated the building as a Grade I listed building. The church also has a monumental brass dating back to 1475, an ancient font and a monument to Samuel Daniel, poet and historian. Also at Beckington are the remains of Alexander Huish, one of the editors of the Polyglot Bible. It was also the birthplace of Thomas Beckington, Bishop of Bath and Wells, who died in 1645 . Also of historic interest is The Abbey dating from 1502, formerly a college for priests and monastic grange, later adapted as a house. The cottages in Church Street date from early 18th century. Refreshment can be found at The Foresters Arms and also at The Woolpack Inn, a delightful stone coaching inn with a charming courtyard. The Woolpack offers a choice of two restaurants.
