Berrow is a coastal village in Somerset, located in the Sedgemoor district. Its beach, Berrow Beach, is a beautiful stretch of sandy beach which looks out on to the Bristol Channel. There is a shipwreck of a Norwegian 'barque' the SS Nornen, which ran aground in 1897, on the beach at Berrow. Fortunately, the local lifeboat team were on hand and, fighting the gale themselves, managed to save the hapless Norwegian crew. The village church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, dates from the 13th century. It was restored in the 19th century and has been designated as a Grade I listed building. The tower contains a bell made by the Bilbie family dating from 1801. To the west of the villag are the Berrow dunes which are noted for unusual plants and also host a gold course. Berrow Marsh, situated between the village and the beach, is a mixture of reedbed and saltmarsh. Many wetland bird species such as Reed and Sedge Warbler live here amongst large numbers of Common Snipe. In winter occasional Jack Snipe can be seen. If you are looking for somewhere to stay whilst visiting Berrow, you could try the self catering Hurn Farm Cottages, situated in acres of beautiful countryside yet only a few minutes walk from the beach.
