The charming English village of Bishops Lydeard, just a few miles North West of Taunton, makes a good base for exploring Somerset. It is bordered to the north by the beautiful Quantock Hills and the Somerset coast and to the west by Exmoor National Park. The village dates back to at least Saxon times, although an urn of Roman coins was found in the area perhaps suggesting greater antiquity. In the Domesday Book of 1086, the manor is referred to as Lidegar. In 1291 Edward I granted a charter to the village, allowing it to hold weekly markets. The railway first came to Bishops Lydeard in 1862; today the village has an important station on the West Somerset Railway, a preserved steam railway. After a ride on the steam train, you can visit the Bishops Lydeard Mill. There were originally two working mills in the village but one of which was demolished. Bishops Lydeard Mill survived and has been made into a museum where you can see the old mill at work. Whilst visiting you can take refreshment at Dusty Miller's tea room. You should also pay a visit to the local church of St Mary, which dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries, and was extended in the 19th century.
