Situated on the shores of the longest and largest inlet in England's coastline is the charming Somerset village of Brean. Brean Down, some 300ft high, forms the northern boundary of the village. It juts out into the Bristol Channel and separates Brean from Weston-super-Mare. The Down at one time must have been an extension of the Mendip Hills. Signs of ancient settlement with dating back to the Stone Age have been found on the Down. Evidence of extinct Mammoths and Bison dating 10,000 years B.C. has been found as well as burial mounds from the Bronze Age. A Roman Temple dating from about 340 AD has also been excavated on the Down. Four acres of Brean Down were requisitioned in 1862 for Brean Fort. The fort was built at the time of the Napoleonic wars, but no shots were ever fired in action. Brean Down also provides a favourite walk in the area. It's a tough climb up the steps or road followed by a glorious walk along the top to the Napoleonic fort, offering views over Weston and of the islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm. In the summer the village transforms into a tourist resort, with the beach at Brean Sands being a major attraction.
