Butcombe is a small village situated 10 miles to the south of Bristol, with easy access to the A38. It is situated close to two lakes, Blagdon Lake and Chew Valley Lake. Blagdon Lake was originally created by Bristol Water who dammed the River Yeo in 1891 and completed the lake in 1899. The Wrington Vale Light Railway was built mainly to bring up building materials. Today the lake is a nature reserve, but also provides drinking water and fishing. The original suction tanks are now used for trout rearing. The four original steam pumps at the pumping station have now been replaced by electric pumps. One of the two steam engines which have been preserved is still in working order in the visitor centre, which also includes educational facilities. Butcombe also gives its name to the Butcombe Brewery, although the brewery has since moved to Wrington. Simon Whitmore set up Butcombe Brewery using his £24,000 redundancy payment from Courage Western. The Brewery now produces over 22,000 barrels per year including Butcombe Bitter, Butcombe Blond, Butcombe Gold and Butcombe Brunel. Visitors to Butcombe can visit the 15th century church and stay in the self catering 14th century cottages at the Butcombe Farm Cottages.
