Chard is a very old town and parish in the county of Somerset. It is situated 15 miles south west of Yeovil, on the A30 close to the Devon border. It is the southernmost and, at 397 feet above sea level, the highest town in Somerset. Chard was the original seat of Cerdic, the first King of Wessex. Some scholars consider the legend of King Arthur to have been based on Cerdic and some believe Camelot was located somewhere near Chard. The Church of St Mary the Virgin was rebuilt in the 15th century but originally dates from the 11th century. There are two bells made by Thomas Bilbie dating from circa 1790. The church has been designated a Grade I listed building by English Heritage. Whilst in Chard, you should visit Forde Abbey and Grange, founded in 1146 and for many centuries one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in England. Chard also lays claim to being the birthplace of aviation, as in 1848 that aeronautical pioneer John Stringfellow first demonstrated that engine-powered flight was possible at Chard. Pubs in Chard include The Cerdic, The Phoenix Hotel and The Happy Return, for accommodation you could try the Watermead Guest House in the High Street.
