Cheddar is a large village at the foot of the Mendip Hills in Somerset. A steep gorge, Cheddar Gorge, is the largest in England and inks the village to the Mendips. The twisting narrow road that leads up the gorge had to be closed some years ago due to the constant threat of landslips. There are several large and unique Sites of Special Scientific Interest around the village including Cheddar Reservoir and Cheddar Wood. By far the largest is called Cheddar Complex and covers 441.3 hectares (1,090.5 acres) of the gorge, caves and the surrounding area. Cheddar grew up around farming and quarrying or mining. Limestone is still extracted nearby and the village's biggest claim to fame comes from dairy farming. Cheddar cheese, the most popular type of cheese in England and one that is known around the world, was first produced here. There is still one last remaining cheese producer in the village. At The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company you can actually see how the famous local product is made. It's not just cheese that the local farmland produces. The south facing slopes of the Mendip Hills combine well with Somerset's mild climate to produce some of the best strawberries in England.
