Often referred to as simply 'Clutton', Clutton-on-the-Mendips is situated about 10 miles due south of Bristol on the A37 road. It is also only about 10 miles from the historic city of Bath and thus provides an excellent base for visiting Somerset and the West Country. The village is listed in the Doomsday Book as Clutone, believed to be from the Old English for 'rocky hill enclosure'. The history of the area goes back before the Normans however, the area was also an important one for the Romans. They are believed to have begun the mining of coal in the area, which was to become a very important part of the local industry. Coal was mined at collieries around Clutton from the early 19th century until the early 20th century. The mines were part of the Somerset Coalfield and were owned by the Earl of Warwick, who had many industrial and agricultural interests in the area. Today the area makes a perfect spot to use as a base for visiting The Mendip Hills; a range of limestone hills and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
