East Brent lies five miles to the west of Axbridge in the charming English county of Somerset. The village lies to the north of the Knoll of Brent, which means Beacon Hill, a 450 foot high hill that dominates the surrounding landscape. A spot on the hill bears the name Battleborough, after a battle in AD875 when the Saxons drove back the Danes. The area is also mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Archeological evidence dating as far back as the Bronze Age and Iron Age has been found on the hill. Evidence of Roman occupation has also been found at the site. The Knoll itself dates back to Jurassic times, some 300 million years ago. The hill is part of the Somerset Levels and was surrounded by water until the Levels were drained. This helped give rise to the hills other names, 'Frog Island' or 'Mount of Frogs'. The village is a small picture postcard village with a bunnery, a butcher and a fryer. East Brent has a number of beautiful old buildings including Ivyclad Hall and the old Chapel. There are also charming pubs including The Red Cow and The Fox and Goose Inn.
