High Littleton and its hamlet Hallatrow are situated in the North East of the English county of Somerset. It is within easy reach of Bath, Wells and Bristol, the furthest of these being only 12 miles away. Evidence suggests that settlements existed in the area as far back as the late 7th century, when the Saxons called it 'Lytel tun'. Hallatrow may in fact be considerably older. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as Liteltone, meaning small enclosure. For millions of years, coal has lain under this part of North Somerset. This was undoubtedly known to the Romans and the Saxons after them. However, the difficulty in getting to the coal meant that for centuries people ignored the coal and continued to use wood and charcoal for fuel, which were far easier to obtain. Mining of coal began at least as early as 1630. By the mid 18th century coal mining was the biggest single industry in High Littleton. The colliery finally closed in 1911. Many fine buildings survive from High Littleton's past, including the 15th century stone church of The Holy Trinity. Also worth a visit are The Grange at Hallatrow, dated 1669, and High Littleton House which was built by Thomas Hodges around 1710.
